Program Overview
The Doctor of Philosophy in Architecture at the University of Kansas is an advanced academic program designed for individuals seeking to deepen their research, analytical, and theoretical expertise within the architectural discipline. Grounded in scholarly rigor, the program prepares students to generate original research that advances architectural knowledge, informs practice, and contributes to broader social, cultural, and environmental discourse.
At its core, the PhD architecture program at KU fosters a scholarly environment where creativity, critical thinking, and ethical responsibility converge. Students are encouraged to engage deeply with the guiding question: “What ought we do as architects and researchers to enhance the quality of life on this planet?” This framing situates architectural research as an active contributor to societal well-being, positioning scholarship as a tool for understanding and improving the built environment at multiple scales.
The program supports sustained, faculty-mentored research that integrates theory, history, technology, and human-centered inquiry. Doctoral students refine advanced research methodologies, develop conceptual frameworks, and produce original scholarship that contributes meaningfully to academic, professional, and policy-oriented conversations, organized around several interconnected research focus areas that reflect faculty expertise and contemporary challenges within the discipline:
- Progressive Models of Practice: Exploring evidence-based design, integrated practice, and design-build approaches that advance innovation within the architectural profession.
- Affordable Housing: Investigating housing models that balance economic feasibility, design quality, and social equity to address pressing housing needs.
- Material Investigations: Conducting research on building materials and systems to support sustainable, efficient, and cost-effective construction practices.
- Built Artifact Evaluations: Applying rigorous evaluative methods to existing buildings and environments to inform future design decisions and performance outcomes.
- Person–Place Interaction: Translating empirical research on human behavior and perception into design guidelines that enhance occupant experience and well-being.
- Human Settlement Patterns: Analyzing historical and contemporary settlement patterns to inform urban design, planning, and policy decisions.
