Program Overview

The PhD art history program in the Kress Foundation Department of Art History is designed for students who are passionate about exploring the rich historical, cultural, and social contexts of visual arts through sustained scholarly inquiry. This doctoral degree offers students the opportunity to work closely with accomplished faculty while developing deep expertise in specific areas of art historical study. With nine full-time professors, affiliated faculty in Classics, and six curators in the Spencer Museum of Art, the art history department offers courses, expertise, and opportunities in a broad array of fields. The Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art, Kemper Museum of Contemporary Art, Nerman Museum of Contemporary Art, Kansas City Art Institute (and its Artspace), and a range of other art venues in Kansas City further expand the rich opportunities afforded our graduate students and contribute to making KU a particularly exciting place to study art history.
