Program Overview
The PhD in Pharmacology program at the University of Kansas Medical Center prepares students for careers at the forefront of biomedical research. This rigorous program combines comprehensive coursework with extensive laboratory experience, empowering graduates to advance scientific discovery and improve patient outcomes. Students enter the program through the KUMC Interdisciplinary Graduate Program in Biomedical Sciences (IGPBS), completing a year-long core curriculum covering cell biology, molecular biology, protein structure, and the physiological basis of disease. During this first year, students attend an Introduction to Faculty Research Series and complete rotations in three laboratories before selecting their dissertation sponsor. The department is housed in state-of-the-art research space in the Hemenway Life Science Innovation Center, supported in part by a Center of Biomedical Research Excellence (COBRE) grant from the National Institutes of Health.

Admission Requirements
Applicants to the PhD in Pharmacology program must meet the following criteria:
- A bachelor’s or master’s degree from a regionally accredited institution in chemistry, biological sciences, pharmacy, or a related discipline, with official transcripts
- A cumulative GPA of at least 3.0 on a 4.0 scale
- Three letters of recommendation
- Prerequisite coursework: one year of general chemistry; one year of organic chemistry (or one semester of organic chemistry and one semester of biochemistry); one year of biological sciences; one semester of calculus; one semester of physics
- Research experience beyond required lab coursework is strongly recommended
