Program Overview
The University of Kansas offers a comprehensive Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD) program designed to prepare students for diverse careers in pharmacy practice. This PharmD degree is offered as a dedicated pathway for current KU undergraduate students or prospective undergraduate students who plan to complete their pre-pharmacy coursework at KU before progressing into the professional curriculum. Students earn a bachelor’s degree as part of this structured pathway while completing requirements leading to the PharmD degree. Our PharmD degree emphasizes a robust curriculum, experiential learning, and research opportunities, ensuring graduates are well-equipped to excel in various healthcare settings.
Students begin the pharmacy degree pathway as undergraduates, completing required pre-pharmacy coursework before applying to advance into the professional PharmD curriculum. The program integrates foundational sciences, clinical sciences, and professional practice skills to prepare graduates for patient-centered care in an evolving healthcare system. Throughout the PharmD curriculum, students develop expertise in pharmacotherapy, patient assessment, medication safety, and healthcare systems.
A distinctive feature of our PharmD degree is the emphasis on experiential learning. Students participate in introductory and advanced pharmacy practice experiences across various settings, including community pharmacies, hospitals, ambulatory care clinics, and health systems. These hands-on experiences allow students to apply classroom knowledge to real-world scenarios, developing competencies in patient counseling, medication therapy management, population health, and interprofessional collaboration. Advanced Pharmacy Practice Experiences (APPEs) in the final professional year provide immersive, full-time clinical training under pharmacist preceptors.
At KU, we are committed to fostering a supportive and inclusive learning environment. Our faculty are dedicated educators and mentors, providing personalized guidance to help students achieve their academic and professional objectives. With state-of-the-art laboratories, simulation environments, and experiential partnerships across Kansas and beyond, students in the PharmD degree pathway gain meaningful preparation for professional practice and PharmD jobs in a variety of settings.
