Program Overview

The master of architecture program at the University of Kansas is a professional, NAAB-accredited degree pathway specifically designed for students entering college directly from high school or transferring from another undergraduate institution. This integrated curriculum allows students to earn both a bachelor’s degree and a professional master of architecture degree in a single, continuous plan of study, preparing graduates for architectural licensure in just five years.

The architecture degree curriculum emphasizes hands-on learning across multiple areas of practice, including:

  • building technologies
  • environmental systems
  • sustainability
  • urban design
  • digital fabrication

Experiential learning is a defining feature of KU’s architecture graduate programs. Students have access to advanced fabrication laboratories, digital modeling resources, and research initiatives that support exploration at both the undergraduate and graduate levels. Community-based design studios, design-build experiences, and applied research projects allow students to work with real stakeholders while addressing contemporary architectural challenges.

The master of architecture curriculum culminates in a comprehensive design thesis completed during the final year of study. This capstone experience synthesizes five years of academic and studio learning, enabling students to articulate an individual design perspective supported by rigorous research and technical resolution. Graduates leave the program with a professional credential that qualifies them to begin the licensure process and pursue a wide range of architectural and design-related careers.
