Program Overview
The Professional Science Master’s in Environmental Assessment at the University of Kansas is a career-focused master’s in environmental science designed for students seeking a multidisciplinary approach to solving complex environmental challenges. This STEM-designated degree blends advanced scientific training with applied business, communication, and project management skills, preparing graduates for leadership roles in environmental consulting, regulatory compliance, environmental justice and community resilience planning, and natural resource management.
Unlike traditional research-oriented programs, this environmental assessment master’s program emphasizes applied problem-solving and professional preparation. Students gain advanced knowledge in environmental systems, assessment methods, and regulatory frameworks while developing practical skills in project management, data analysis and stakeholder communication. The program prepares students to evaluate environmental impacts, interpret scientific data for decision-makers, and recommend evidence-based solutions to environmental issues.
Coursework spans environmental law and policy, soil, water, and air systems science, land use impacts, toxicology, and nature-based solutions to restoration. Students learn to integrate scientific principles with regulatory and business considerations to support responsible environmental decision-making.
A defining feature of this environmental science masters degree is its Professional Science Master’s structure. In addition to core scientific coursework, students complete professional development components that strengthen leadership, teamwork, and project management skills. The capstone experience requires students to apply technical expertise to real-world scenarios, often in collaboration with industry, government or community partners. This applied structure distinguishes the program from traditional environmental science masters programs that may focus exclusively on academic research pathways.
